Comprehensive Guide to the Weighted Airman Promotion System (WAPS)

Overview of WAPS

The Weighted Airman Promotion System (WAPS) is a crucial component of the United States Air Force (USAF) promotion process, designed to evaluate and advance enlisted personnel to higher ranks. Specifically, WAPS is used to determine promotions to the ranks of Staff Sergeant (E-5) and Technical Sergeant (E-6).

Key Components of WAPS

WAPS evaluates candidates based on two primary tests:

  1. Promotion Fitness Examination (PFE):
    • Content: The PFE covers material from the Professional Development Guide (PDG) and assesses Air Force knowledge including history, organization, regulations, practices, traditions, and customs.
    • Scoring: Candidates earn points based on the number of correct responses out of 80 questions. Each correct answer contributes to the total score.
  2. Specialty Knowledge Test (SKT):
    • Content: This test evaluates knowledge specific to the Airman’s Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) derived from the Career Development Course (CDC), applicable Air Force instructions, and manuals.
    • Scoring: Points are awarded based on the number of correct responses out of 100 questions.

Promotion Eligibility Requirements

To compete for promotion, Airmen must meet specific eligibility criteria and ensure their records are weighable. Eligibility is governed by Department of the Air Force Instruction (DAFI) 36-2502. An Airman’s Data Verification Record will indicate whether their promotion record is weighable or non-weighable.

Expert Insight:

“Understanding the requirements outlined in DAFI 36-2502 is crucial for Airmen aiming for promotion,” says Lt. Col. Michael Evans, USAF Promotion Board Expert. “Ensuring that all records are accurately updated and meet eligibility standards can significantly impact an Airman’s promotion prospects.”

Airmen Responsibilities and Requirements

Exam Day Procedures

  1. Identification: Airmen must present their Common Access Card (CAC) and ensure their Electronic Data Interchange Personnel Identifier (EDIPI) on the CAC matches the EDIPI on the examinee roster from the Air Force Personnel Center (AFPC).
  2. Uniform: Examinees are required to wear an authorized uniform or the uniform of the day. However, those testing off-base at Commercial Testing Centers may test in civilian clothes, especially if authorized by force protection and security protocols. OSI agents testing off-base can also wear civilian clothes.
  3. Off-Base Testing: Airmen approved by HQ AFPC/DP3DA for off-base testing should schedule their exams at any available date within the testing cycle. They must adhere to local travel policies and minimize the impact on their mission responsibilities.
  4. Account Creation: Airmen must create a Pearson VUE account before their test date, including setting up a username, password, and security questions. It is essential to remember these credentials, as failure to do so may result in a “No-Show” and be reported to their commander under the “No-Show” policy per DAFMAN 36-2664.

Pro Tip: “Creating a secure and memorable password along with reliable security answers can prevent issues on exam day,” advises Chief Master Sergeant Lisa Johnson, USAF. “Ensure your account details are accurate and updated well before the test.”

Disclaimer on Data Usage

Airmen will be asked to agree to disclaimers regarding data use and palm vein consent during account creation. It is important to note:

  • Data Privacy: Pearson VUE and the USAF do not collect or use palm vein patterns. The test centers do not have palm vein readers.
  • Information Use: Only name and email address are required. Phone numbers and addresses are optional. Personal information is used exclusively for test result processing and will not be sold or shared with external entities.

Important Note: “Understanding the data usage disclaimers ensures that Airmen are fully informed about how their personal information will be handled,” explains cybersecurity expert Dr. Emily Carter.
