Essential Information for Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Computer Based Test (CBT) Candidates

Date of Implementation: June 24, 2024

As part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) ongoing efforts to enhance the Test of Competence (ToC), we will be incorporating additional items into the Computer Based Test (CBT) starting June 24, 2024. This update aims to maintain the test’s relevance and rigor, ensuring it accurately assesses the competencies required for nursing and midwifery professionals.

Key Information for Candidates

  1. No Additional Time: The test duration remains unchanged. The time allocated is sufficient to complete the additional questions without requiring extra time.
  2. Purpose of the Test: The NMC’s Test of Competence is designed to evaluate the skills and knowledge of individuals seeking to join or rejoin the NMC register. This is applicable for those coming from overseas or returning to practice after a prolonged absence.
  3. Test Structure:
    • The ToC comprises two parts. The first part is the CBT, which is available at Pearson VUE test centers and various professional locations.
    • To successfully advance with your NMC application, you must pass both parts of the ToC.
  4. Conduct During the CBT:
    • Adherence to the instructions provided by the test center staff is mandatory.
    • Non-compliance may result in delays or affect your registration process.
    • Detailed candidate and test center rules are outlined in the CBT information handbook, accessible on the NMC website.
  5. Booking Your CBT:
    • After the NMC instructs you to take the CBT, you may schedule your test online or via phone.
    • Booking is allowed up to one working day before the test date.
    • Notifications regarding bookings, reschedules, and cancellations will be sent via email from addresses ending in “@pearson.com”. Please check your email’s junk folder for such communications.
