Advanced Dental Admission Test (ADAT) Overview

The Advanced Dental Admission Test (ADAT) is administered by the Department of Testing Services (DTS), an independent entity of the American Dental Association (ADA). This standardized examination is designed to assist advanced education program directors in evaluating and ranking applicants based on a nationally recognized and objective assessment.

Key Aspects of the ADAT

Purpose and Importance The ADAT serves a critical role in the selection process for advanced dental education programs. By providing a uniform measure of candidates’ knowledge and skills, the test helps programs identify individuals who are well-prepared for advanced dental training. The ADAT evaluates candidates on various aspects crucial for success in specialized dental fields.

Preparation Resources To ensure candidates are well-prepared for the ADAT, several resources are available:

  • Tutorial Installation Requirements and Instructions: [PDF, 364 KB]
  • ADAT Tutorial: [55.1 MB, Windows-based PC required; Mac users should use alternative methods for preparation]

Scheduling Your ADAT Appointment

Before scheduling your ADAT exam, follow these essential steps:

  1. Review the ADAT Candidate Guide: This guide includes crucial information on eligibility requirements, examination regulations, rules of conduct, and testing center procedures. Ensure you are familiar with these guidelines to avoid any issues during the testing process.
  2. Submit Your Application: Apply through the Department of Testing Services. Your application must either be approved by your dental dean or include proof of graduation from an accredited dental education program. For comprehensive details, consult the ADAT Candidate Guide.
  3. Receive Eligibility Confirmation: Await an eligibility email from DTS, confirming your eligibility to take the ADAT.
  4. Create a Pearson VUE Account: First-time test takers must set up an account with Pearson VUE. This account is necessary for scheduling and managing your testing appointments.

Scheduling and Rescheduling

  • Schedule Your Appointment: Once you have your Pearson VUE account, you can schedule your ADAT appointment. It is recommended to book your slot as early as possible due to high demand and limited availability.
  • Rescheduling: A $25 transaction fee applies for each rescheduled appointment, whether done via the call center or online.

Identification Requirements

Ensure that the name on your ID matches exactly with the name on your ADAT application file. Discrepancies can result in being denied admission to the Pearson VUE Test Center, leading to the forfeiture of your application fee. If you need to update your name, submit a written request to dentpin@ada.org at least two weeks before your scheduled test date. Include your DENTPIN, government-issued photo ID, and any legal documentation supporting your name change.
