Comprehensive Guide to the Certified Fund Raising Executive® (CFRE) Examination

The Certified Fund Raising Executive® (CFRE) Examination is a pivotal assessment for fundraising professionals, measuring their mastery over the essential knowledge and skills required for successful fundraising practices. Accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under the ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024 standard, the CFRE credential represents a rigorous benchmark in the field of philanthropy.

Overview of the CFRE Certification

The CFRE certification is designed to validate your proficiency in a wide range of fundraising tasks. The certification process is overseen by CFRE International, an independent nonprofit dedicated to establishing and upholding high standards in philanthropy.

Key Areas Assessed in the CFRE Examination:

  • Donor Relations: Strategies for engaging and maintaining donor relationships.
  • Fundraising Planning: Development and implementation of effective fundraising strategies.
  • Financial Management: Oversight of budgets, financial controls, and reporting.
  • Ethics and Accountability: Adherence to ethical standards and accountability in fundraising activities.
  • Program Evaluation: Assessing the effectiveness of fundraising programs and initiatives.

Application Process for the CFRE Examination

Before scheduling your examination appointment, ensure that you have completed the following steps:

  1. Application Approval: Obtain approval for your Initial Certification Application from CFRE International.
  2. Eligibility Notification: Receive your Eligibility ID Number (EIN) from CFRE International, confirming your eligibility to sit for the examination.
  3. Payment of Fee: Pay the Initial Certification Fee to CFRE International.

Important Note: Ensure that the name you provided to CFRE International matches exactly with the name on your photo identification. Discrepancies must be resolved with CFRE International prior to arriving at the test center.

Scheduling Your Computer-Based Exam

Upon receiving your exam authorization from Pearson VUE, you will get an authorization to test email. Follow these steps to schedule your examination:

  1. Create a Pearson VUE Account: Sign in as a RETURNING USER using the login credentials provided. Do not use the “CREATE A WEB ACCOUNT” link.
  2. Schedule Your Exam: Appointments can be scheduled up to 24 hours in advance, subject to availability. Testing locations fill up quickly, so it’s advisable to book as early as possible.
  3. Receive Confirmation: After scheduling, Pearson VUE will send a confirmation email with your test date, time, test center address, and directions.

Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA)

At the beginning of your exam, you will be required to agree to the Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Failure to accept the NDA within the allotted 5 minutes will result in the termination of your exam and forfeiture of exam fees. Familiarize yourself with the CFRE NDA in advance to avoid any issues during your test.

Remote Proctoring Considerations: CFRE International has provisional approval for remote proctoring. However, if this approval is revoked, you will be entitled to a free retake of the exam at a testing center. You must complete the retake within six months of notification. Failure to do so will result in the revocation of your certification and no refund of the certification fee.
