Exam Scheduling and Formats

Candidates looking to advance their dermatology career must be aware of the examination schedules and formats. ABD offers several key exams throughout the year, each tailored to different stages of professional development.

Important Update: Candidates can now access the Pearson VUE scheduling system and initiate OnVUE (online proctoring) exams directly through ABDerm.org. There is no need for additional credentials to use Pearson VUE tools.

2023 Examination Dates and Details

  1. CORE Examination (For Dermatology Residents)The CORE Examination is designed for residents and is available in three windows throughout the year. Candidates may choose between taking the exam in person at a Pearson VUE® Authorized Test Center or online using the OnVUE system.
    • Late Winter Session: February 8 – February 22, 2023
    • Summer Session: July 12 – July 26, 2023
    • Fall Session: November 1 – November 15, 2023
    Online Testing with OnVUE: This option provides flexibility and convenience. However, candidates must ensure they have a private, distraction-free environment for the exam. A pre-test system check will verify that your computer and internet meet the required standards. During the test, you will be monitored by proctors and AI tools to ensure a secure testing environment.
  2. APPLIED Examination (For Graduated Dermatology Residents who have completed the CORE Exam)
    • Delivery Date: July 20, 2023
    • Format: This exam is only available at Pearson VUE Professional Centers.
  3. MDS Examination (For ABD Diplomates seeking subspecialty certification in Medical Dermatology)
    • Delivery Dates: October 16 – October 21, 2023
    • Format: Available exclusively at Pearson VUE Professional Centers.
  4. Pediatric Dermatology Subspecialty Examination (For ABD Diplomates seeking subspecialty certification in Pediatric Dermatology)
    • Delivery Date: October 11, 2023
    • Format: Conducted only at Pearson VUE Professional Centers.

  1. For In-Person Testing:
    • Location: Schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE Professional Center.
    • Requirements: Ensure you have the necessary identification and arrive on time for your appointment.
  2. For Online Testing with OnVUE:
    • System Check: Complete a system test to confirm your computer and internet setup are adequate.
    • Testing Environment: Set up a private, quiet space where you will not be interrupted during the exam.
    • Proctoring: Be prepared for both human proctors and AI-assisted monitoring throughout your test.
