How to Apply and Become Certified

Application Process:

  1. Submit Your Application: Start by applying for certification through the HIMSS Certification Application Portal. Once your application is reviewed, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) Notice, including your Candidate ID and Client Authorization ID.
  2. Verify Your Information: Ensure that the name on your ATT Notice exactly matches the name on a currently valid, government-issued photo ID. Discrepancies may lead to issues during check-in, resulting in forfeiture of your exam fee. If there are any mismatches, contact the HIMSS Certification Department at least 10 days before your test date.

Special Accommodations: If you need special accommodations, complete the Request for Special Examination Accommodations form from the Candidate Handbook and email it with supporting documents to certification@himss.org.

Choosing Your Exam Delivery Method

Exam Delivery Options:

  1. In-Person Testing: Take your exam at a Pearson VUE® Authorized Test Center. These centers follow stringent health and safety protocols, including social distancing and sanitization measures.
  2. Online Testing with OnVUE: Opt for a remote proctored exam from the comfort of your home or office. This option offers flexibility but requires a private, distraction-free environment and a compatible computer setup.
    • Technical Requirements: Your computer must have a webcam, microphone, and stable internet connection. Perform a system check to ensure compatibility with the OnVUE platform. For detailed system requirements, visit the OnVUE Technical Requirements page.
    • Proctoring: During the remote exam, you will be monitored by a live proctor and assistive AI tools to ensure exam integrity.

Scheduling and Managing Your Exam

Exam Scheduling:

  • In-Person: Schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE test center through their website.
  • Online: Select the online option and schedule your exam through the OnVUE platform.

Rescheduling and Cancellation Policies:

  • Rescheduling: You must reschedule at least 48 hours before your appointment. Failure to do so or missing your appointment will result in forfeiture of your exam fee.
  • Cancellation: Similar to rescheduling, exams must be canceled at least 48 hours in advance. A missed cancellation deadline will also result in a forfeited fee.

What to Bring:

  • Identification: Present one valid government-issued photo ID. The name must match the registration details. Bring a second ID if possible for additional verification.
  • Personal Items: No personal items, including bags, phones, and notes, are allowed in the testing area. For in-person tests, lock personal items in a designated locker.

Exam Day Tips

  • Preparation: Arrive at the exam center 30 minutes early or set up your remote testing environment well in advance.
  • During the Exam: No breaks, food, or beverages are permitted during the exam. For online proctoring, ensure your testing environment minimizes distractions.

Exam Results

Results are typically available immediately after completing the exam. For beta exam results, expect a delay until the beta period concludes and the passing score is determined. If you do not receive your results within 45 days, contact the HIMSS Certification Department.
