National Board of Echocardiography (NBE) Certification Overview

The National Board of Echocardiography (NBE) is dedicated to enhancing the quality of cardiovascular patient care by providing rigorous certification examinations for physicians specializing in echocardiography. Established in 1996 as a volunteer-led, not-for-profit organization, NBE’s mission is to advance clinical practice through comprehensive certification programs that reflect specialized knowledge and expertise in echocardiography.

NBE Certification Programs

The NBE offers several certification examinations to validate the proficiency of physicians in various aspects of echocardiography. These certifications are crucial for professionals seeking to demonstrate their advanced competencies in the field. Here is an overview of the certification options available:

  • Examination of Special Competence in Adult Echocardiography (ASCeXAM): This exam evaluates a physician’s expertise in adult echocardiography, assessing their ability to apply echocardiographic techniques in clinical settings.
  • Examination of Special Competence in Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography (PTEeXAM): Focused on advanced perioperative echocardiography, this exam is designed for physicians who need to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of transesophageal echocardiography in surgical contexts.
  • Examination of Special Competence in Basic Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography (Basic PTE): This certification assesses fundamental skills in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography, relevant for general clinical use.
  • Examination of Special Competence in Critical Care Echocardiography (CCEeXAM): This exam targets critical care echocardiography, evaluating the physician’s competence in managing echocardiographic procedures in high-acuity environments.

NBE’s certifications are recognized for their high standards and are essential for physicians aiming to establish themselves as experts in echocardiography.
